Born to beloved Chinese immigrant parents in New York City, Nancy Hom was the eldest child of three girls. Nancy’s parents came to America from Toisan (a city in Southern China) to build a better life for themselves and their future generations. Her father, a Chinese restaurant cook and her mother, a sewing machine operator, had a tremendous influence on her life. In particular, Sun Lan Hom, Nancy’s mother, began teaching Nancy the intricacies of sewing, knitting and crocheting at the young age of 6. In addition to her rigorous day job, Nancy’s mother also worked evenings as a costume jewelry maker to earn additional income for the family. Thanks to her mother’s patience, Nancy quickly learned and developed many of Sun Lan’s hand crafting talents. This also meant she deconstructed many items around the house and re-assembled them in an effort to create unique items. It was true test of her mother’s patience.
This core interest in creative design led Nancy to study fashion at the renowned Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Her career as a successful apparel designer for 30 years features a resume comprised of a variety of world-renowned brands located in New York, San Francisco and Seattle.
Sunlan Designs is named in honor of Nancy’s mother – a true inspiration in love, creativity and of Nancy’s passion for the Chinese culture she was raised in. Nancy currently lives in Seattle with her husband and two daughters.
